We parked at the Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, whose mascot is a woolly mammoth

We crossed the little river Onny, and across the fields to Nortoncamp Woods. It was a stiff-ish climb up through the woods to the actual hill fort, which is quite a big one with double ditch & ramparts – but in reality not that impressive!

We crossed the road & railway line, and found a spot at the top of a field for our picnic. Entertainment was provided by a couple in the distance, who had clearly lost their way – he was determined to figure out where they were on the map, she had clearly had enough and could see a main road, possibly with a bus!

It was a good day: we met a lot of different “fun guys”

We came upon Stokesay Castle quite suddenly. As it’s owned by English Heritage and we are CADW members, it would have been rude not to look around. It started life as a fortified manor house, and has been somewhat adapted over the centuries – and has been most sympathetically restored.

After an ice cream, it was a short walk along the river back to the car park, and a quick pint before heading home for roast chicken.
