We needed to nip into Welshpool for a few essentials – there was a passing shower while we were in Tesco, and then the rest of the day was beautiful.
We parked under Bromlow Callow and walked up to the little copse at the top. There were magnificent views to the east over the Cheshire plain, to the north and Snowdonia (although it was quite hazy to see much), and to the west into Wales.

We turned south along the ridge of Stapeley Hill, with views across to the Stiperstones, and Red Kites & Ravens playing in the breeze over our heads.

Mitchell’s Fold is another bronze age site, a stone circle. Local legend tells of a magic cow that gave unlimited milk, until a wicked witch milked her into a sieve and caused her to disappear. As punishment, the witch was turned into a standing stone, and the circle erected to imprison her.

We turned back north above the valley to the west of the ridge, across farmland back to Bromlow Callow. Unfortunately the pub where we had parked was closed – it turned out it’s a private wedding venue & not really open to the public! So we had to make do with a flask of tea & a choccie biccie.
Google maps found us a very narrow route back to the house. We had a proper cup of tea and a shower, and spatchcock poussin for supper.
