2026-06-11 Keswick Museums

Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain… Forecast for all day…

We went up to Keswick Town Museum, which has all the usual dusty things in glass cases.

Crystals
Fossils
Lithophone

But one very unusual thing was a lithophone, made of tuned pieces of slate – and we were not just permitted but encouraged to play it! Although I should think the staff get quite bored quite fast.

We had lunch in a local cafe, and then it had to be the Pencil Museum.

The largest pencil in the world
The smallest sculpture, on a pencil tip
Delivery van

By this time the weather had eased up a bit, so we walked along the river Greta and then along the old railway line towards Threlkeld.

Shall I paddle?

Bobbin Mill Tunnel
It’s very dog-friendly here

We had a cup of tea in a cafe along the route, and then headed back to town for an ice cream as well (we are on holiday!). We went back to the B&B for an hour’s feet-up, then to the pub for supper.
