  • We’d packed everything back into car by 10am, did a little bit of shopping, then headed up to Bolsterstone near Sheffield. We walked down to the reservoir, also very low following the dry winter & spring. Through the woods along the far side, and up to the Hall (rems of), where we found a sheltered… Read more

  • Slightly less sunny, slightly more breezy, chance of rain from 4pm. We parked in Edale, and took the route up Grindsbrook Clough, passing several Geography field trip groups on the way. We turned west along the rim of the plateau, again passing many wind-blown rocks. They were noticeably different from yesterday’s layer cakes, but just… Read more

  • Today will be sunny, and far less windy! We drove to the top of Ladybower Reservoir, parking almost under Derwent dam itself, and strolled north along the edge of Derwent reservoir. The water levels are very low, maybe 5m down, following the dry spring. We turned away and up the hill… And up, and up…… Read more

  • 2025-06-10 Dovedale

The forecast was dry but VERY windy, so we decided to stay low rather than risk being blown off the high peaks. So we parked in Hartington, and walked down the river Dove (in the footsteps of Izaak Walton & his fishing bro Charles Cotton). We passed a GCSE Geography field trip, measuring the river… Read more

  • We loaded up the car and left York pretty much at 10am, and got to the pub very soon after 12.  Standard pub lunch (burger, scampi) fuelled us for an afternoon in the fresh air. We headed west along the Monsal Trail (a disused railway line), past various pieces of industrial architecture. Soon we turned… Read more

A cold wind & showers… A day for museums! The Grosvenor Museum is the local town museum, full of bits of Roman and of schoolchildren with worksheets. There was also a room of rather nice silver pieces, and the usual random selection of portraits. Attached at the back is a “period house”, with each room… Read more

  • Today was again a bright & breezy day… There are a number of geocache trails around the city, which always highlight interesting titbits of local knowledge. We started off by heading across the river to find the shrine to Minerva, carved into the bedrock in a local park. We ambled round & gawped at the… Read more

  • The weather was much better today – bright but breezy – we could see Wales while having breakfast! We booked ourselves onto a walking tour of the town. It’s an excellent way to get some background info about a place, and there were only four of us.  We hopped from period to period as we… Read more

  • 2025-02-23 Chester

The trains were behaving particularly well, and we got into Chester exactly at 1pm. Unfortunately the weather had worsened as we went further west, and it was wet & blustery, and not very warm, but only a 10 minute walk to our apartment. The apartment is smart and comfortable, with views of the canal basin… Read more
