2026-02-25 Waterfalls

The forecast for the morning looked OK, with maybe rain after lunch.

We headed out of the village along the beck and through the woods – plenty of snowdrops, and bluebell leaves (but no flowers yet). and wild garlic starting to show through as well.

The first waterfall was a cascade down, from a gaping maw in the rocks

We headed further up the valley, the path mostly perfectly walkable, but occasionally extremely muddy! We couldn’t get very close to Whitfield Gill Force, but nevertheless it was impressive.

And there were other falls and cascades, all nicely full of water.

We cut across the fields to Helm and then down into Bainbridge. Unfortunately the pub was very definitely shut, but we found a little cafe that did a very acceptable lunch.

Although the clouds had come down a bit, and there was Weather happening to the north, it was mostly dry on us. We walked along Brough Scar all the way to Worton.

We crossed back over the river at Worton Bridge. It was the right choice – the stepping stones further up didn’t look passable!

What stepping stones?

And then back up to Askrigg, where we had a quick look in the church, and an ice cream.

We also picked up a couple of geocaches around the village, and then back to the hotel for a cup of tea and a shower before supper.

Wednesday: 9 miles
