2024-09-06 Semerwater

(pronounced semmawatta!)

The forecast was bright & breezy. Although it looked threatening at first, and it was hazy on the high fells, the sun shone all day.

We walked down to the river and crossed on the stepping stones

Good sturdy steps

And then walked up the valley, up through the woods, and along to Bainbridge.

Mossy woods

We turned and followed the line of the river up Raydale, to Semerwater.

Semerwater Bridge

The lake is one of only two upland lakes in the dales, constrained by glacial moraines.

We walked a little way along the side of the lake, then headed away up the flank of Wether Fell, and along the top to meet the Roman Road from Ingleton back to Bainbridge.

Very straight, these Roman roads

It was a bit of a slog down to Bainbridge, so when we got there, we had a very well-deserved couple of pints. Then we walked along the disused railway back to the hotel for a shower. Supper was up the road at the Crown (strictly no booking!). Mary had steak pie, and Brian had a gammon steak.

Today we saw…

3 people, 2 dogs, 1 bicyclist

6 RAF jets, one (possibly Galaxy class?) bomber, going out and then home again

Lots of cows, lots and lots of sheep

And it was so sunshiny, Mary got quite burnt, but Brian had remembered his sunhat!
