2024-06-26 above Rydal

Another lovely day 😎

After a couple of days’ long-ish walks, we decided to take it a bit easier today. We looked round William Wordsworth’s house in Grasmere, a 3 bedroom cottage where he lived with his wife, his sister, three babies, and visitors such as Samuel Coleridge Taylor and Thomas da Quincy…

China daffodils

We picniced by a stream in the car park – much prettier than it sounds

White Moss Car Park

Then we headed towards Rydal Mount (on the Coffin Road again) and collected information for a Famous Geocache. Once Mary remembered how to do sums, the checker gave us a green light and we headed up the valley along Rydal Beck.

Birk Hagg falls

By the weir in the woods, Mary got chatting to an engineer for the hydroelectric setup, and now knows more than she needs about such things!

One of the more remote caches we’ve found

We thought it a remote & wild spot, but just round the corner the beck fell through a series of cascades & big pools, in which a whole party of students were paddling & swimming.

Turns out it’s quite a popular spot

The views over Windermere were stunning – despite the RAF’s tornados whizzing round in low circles

Windermere from the north

We got back down to Rydal Mount just in time to have an ice cream from the cafe, and then back to the car and home for chicken casserole.
