Lukers On Tour

2024-06-21 Coniston Old Man

The forecast was for sunny intervals, rather than blisteringly hot.

We parked in the middle of Coniston, and set off on the Copperhead Mines route. It ran along the side of a beck, and picked through much industrial heritage – some of it still active.

Active quarry

We got to Low Water Tarn about 12.30,and stopped for lunch before the final push to the top.

The final climb was stiff but satisfying, and we could see the Tarn getting smaller behind us!

But by the time we got to the top, the cloud had come right down, and the views were… fleeting

We carried on over the top and down to Goat’s Water, and then down (and down) (and down more) to Torver.

Goat’s Water from the top…
… and from the bottom

Past further industrial archaeology

When we got to Torver we were BITTERLY disappointed to find the pub was closed 😭😡😵‍💫🥵

So there was nothing to do but continue down to the lake and along the shore back to Coniston (collecting a number of geocaches along the way).

Fortunately when we got back to Coniston, all the pubs were open – so we chose the one closest to the car park, for a very well-deserved couple of pints!

Then we caught ourselves on the village webcam, before heading home for salmon & chips.
