2024-06-19 Sawrey & Claife Heights

Another excellent forecast 😎

We drove to Ash Landing, where the motor ferry comes from Bowness (but we didn’t get the ferry). We walked up over the fields to Far Sawrey and then Near Sawrey, and Beatrix Potter’s house Hill Top.

Picnic in the garden

After visiting the house, we had our picnic in the garden, then we walked on over the fields to Moss Eccles Tarn, then on through the woods to Claife Heights.

The path down was tricky in places…

We dropped down off the fell… And down… And down… It seemed much further than we had climbed up!

Eventually we reached the Viewing Station. Built in the 1790s, it had stained glass windows, to allow visitors to imagine the view in winter, or by moonlight. The National Trust have recently restored it and installed some basic glass.

A beautiful view!

They have also provided a little cafe for a very well-deserved ice-cream.

After stopping in Hawkshead for a few bits of essential shopping, we came home for sausage, egg & chips.
